Junior Data Scientist

Whom are we looking for

Based in Barcelona, you will work as junior data scientist. With a BSc or MSc in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a related quantitative research field, you are looking for the opportunity to bring your insights and methods to the world of analytics to support policy and strategy for Research & Innovation.

You want to have a strong positive impact on society, and you enjoy discussing strategic issues and advising on policy and strategy. By leveraging quantitative methods, you are interested in using data to support our consulting activities (see: http://unics.cloud/). In particular, you want to work on mapping societal needs within different textual sources and match them with science and innovation competences and resources. You want to support public administrations in taking more rational and responsible decisions, as well as universities and research organisations to orient their research towards societal needs. 

From your academic or professional experience, you know the state-of-the-art of research in NLP and text mining (e.g., you are acquainted with classical NLP methods and/or the  latest developments in the field based on Transformer models). Skills in advanced quantitative methods / data science / programming (proficiency in Python) will be necessary. 

Good working knowledge of English is required

Possible list of tasks

  • Performing Research & Development activities under the supervision of more experienced researchers in the company
  • Performing data preparation and analysis as well as management of data sources on public policy (data retrieval from remote sources, data cleaning, alignment and statistics)
  • Designing and validating NLP algorithms for efficient information extraction, information retrieval, and text mining.
  • Work closely with a software engineering team to translate best-performing techniques into production
  • Designing pipelines for the manual annotation of data sets (i.e., building ad-hoc training and test for the developed algorithms)
  • Develop and devise state-of-the-art machine learning models, algorithms, and statistical models, while leading the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources.

Selection Process and Calendar

  1. The selection process will unfold in accordance with the following steps and calendar:
    1. After an initial CV screening, a first interview will be carried out between 11th and 22nd April 2022. This interview will be performed by at least 2 of our data scientists, and it will encompass a shallow assessment of your technical skills.
    2. A final round of interviews for selected candidates will happen between 2nd and 6th May 2022.

    Final notifications will be sent by 16th May 2022, and you will begin working with us. If it is feasible for you, during May, or if not, you will join SIRIS by the 1st June 2022.

Contract

Full time position (40 hours/week). Our hiring model includes a trial period of 6 months. After a successful trial period, the contract becomes permanent.

What? We are a consulting firm. We work with decision makers in the public or non-profit sector, and provide them with insights, processes and tools, which challenge them to think and enable them to accomplish their mission better.
